Bear Grylls Gerber Survival Scout Serrated Pocket Knife

Who could resist a Bear Grylls signature pocket knife!

At first glance fully deployed, the Bear Grylls knife is somewhat menacing – Even though it is less than 6” in length with a fairly short blade length of 2.5.”

The design makes it a very cool looking knife.

A Must Have Survival Tool?

Well, I don’t know if Bear Grylls would actually choose to take this into the wilderness for survival purposes, but it is well constructed and I would be confident having as an addition to my arsenal for certain applications in a survival situation.

Bug-Out Qualified – This is an ideal little knife to include in your Bug-Out bag. Maybe keep a few of these in there, they’re very compact, lightweight & usable.

Why I Like This Pocket Knife

What I think is really, really useful about this knife is it’s combination straight edge & serrated blade. The knife I carried around before, only sported a straight blade.

For everyday use I find the serrated blade area of the knife much more usable then the straight blade. The problem I had with my straight blade knife is trying to keep it sharp all the time. If it’s not very sharp there’s always a problem with cutting thru some materials. The serrated edge handles most anything the regular blade scoffs at.

The serrated part of the blade is great for almost any situation, especially material like rope, string, plastic such as zip ties, etc… plus it holds an edge quite well.

What’d It Co$t?

I ended up paying about $11.50 (with shipping) for this particular knife. Ebay seems to have these all over the place; some cost less, some cost more, but def worth what I paid. I’d pay up to $15 for one of these.

Light Weight For The Pocket

The handle is made from what appears to be a high strength plastic like material – not flimsy at all like I thought it might be upon first inspection.

What I REALLY love about the knife is it’s versatility in such a light weight design. My old knife was made entirely of tough stainless steal, which would probably survive better in rough outdoor situations, BUT for the everyday urban gauntlet, it’s really clunky & weighty compared to the Bears Grylls knife.

With additional items like: keys, money, chapstick… or whatever else is carried in ones pocket, the additional weight and bulkiness of a knife can be very burdensome; yes, to me this knife made that much of a difference compared to my other one!

BUT I would say the BIGGEST difference is how well it actually performs. When I pull it out of my pocket to cut something or let someone else borrow it real quick for their needs, I know it will not disappoint; whereas with my previous knife there was a certain dread contemplating the struggle to come trying to cut something.

Keeping It Sharp!

I wouldn’t say it’s the ‘sharpest knife in the drawer’ so to speak, but it does very well. I have sharpened the straight edge part of the blade several times to keep it as effective as possible, but always find myself trying to get it just a little bit sharper than it actually ends up being. The carbon steel used to forge the blade could be a bit better for taking & holding an edge, but it’s effective – it’s sharp enough to do a good job cutting something AND the serrated edge MORE than compensates for anything lacking with the straight edge.

I think the serrated area of the blade really propels the knifes’ effective cutting ability – the serrated part of the blade is scary sharp because the apex area of the blade is super small compared to a straight blades continuous edge – this makes it’s cutting ability very effective; I’ve yet the need to sharpen the serrated edge.

Speaking of sharpening: the Lansky Tactical Blademedic Sharpener is a four sharpener tool in one, is affordable and does a great job sharpening blades fast.
